Governor pen portraits - find out more about our governors!

I am very proud to be the Chair of Governors here at Millwood Primary Special School. On becoming a governor, I wanted to use the skills and experience I have gained over twenty-five years as a Registered General Nurse and also from being a director of a not-for-profit limited company. I am passionate about children, young people and adults with additional needs and disabilities. I have two children and many moons ago my son attended Millwood school which I can honestly say were the foundations of his amazing years in his education. My main interests are leadership and management, teaching and learning, health and inclusion. I hope to use my experience to create the best learning opportunities for our children at Millwood.

Away from school I enjoy spending time with my family, reading and walking my dogs Max and Frankie.

Pecuniary interests: Director at First Point Support

I was born in Rochdale, but my family moved to Burnley when I was six months old. I had my primary school education in Burnley, my secondary in Blackburn and university in London. I am married and have three married children and four grandchildren.

In my working life I held a variety of positions with Belling, Silentnight and Philips before becoming a manager in the packing and packaging industry. I developed as a general manager responsible for marketing, sales and production as I increased the number of businesses managed. I took early retirement when in charge of seven factories across the country ranging from Barrow in the North to Penzance in the South, with others in Greater Manchester and the Sheffield area, trading with such companies as Lever Bros, Procter & Gamble, Reckitt & Colman, Jeyes, Benckiser and Castrol.

I took early retirement and became a Councillor in Radcliffe West, Bury in 2001, a seat which I held until I stepped down in May 2021. I am a trustee of the Bury & Bolton Citizens Advice and a governor of two schools in Radcliffe. I have been a governor at Millwood School for a number of years and believe that it is an exceptional school. I will continue to use the skills which I have learned throughout my career to do all in my power to help to keep Millwood at the peak of excellence together with its dedicated and talented leadership and staff.

I am a co-opted governor at Millwood school.

My child attended Millwood School.

As the school have given so much to our family, I applied to join the Governing Body in February 2022. I hope to use my experience of having a child with SEN and as a trained primary school teacher to keep the school improving year on year.

My passions outside of work are enjoying time with my wife and children. Sport and football play a big role in our lives, and I am the coach of my daughter's football team. Our family are passionate Manchester United fans, and I have been a season ticket holder for 25 years.

I am an Associate Governor. I have a passion, respect and deep gratitude for Millwood school, all the staff past and many still present. My eldest son attended Millwood some years ago and he wouldn’t be the young man he is today had he never attended such a caring and fantastic school.

The skills and expertise I bring to the governing body is based on working in the construction industry. As a director my role covers many aspects including, people management, training, recruitment, finances and much more. Throughout my career I have designed and delivered over 100 different education projects from nursery through to universities and over 20+ SEN schools of varying shape and size. I hope to put that expertise to good use and provide the support to the school wherever and whenever I can.
