MILLWOOD BIG DRAW DAY 2022

Here at Millwood School we believe that Art is very important for children’s academic and social development. Art can help children to learn and practice skills like patterning, cause and effect, early mark making, expression and communication. Art can also help to boost a child’s self-confidence, fine motor skills, decision making and perseverance.

On Thursday we held Millwood BIG draw day. Every class within the school were given an artist who uses an element of mark making or drawing within their work to research and then explore. Every child in school took part and each child made their own artworks based upon their chosen theme.

GOLD RIGHTS RESPECTING SCHOOL AWARD

Millwood Primary school in Bury has been awarded Gold by UNICEF UK’s Rights Respecting School programme.

UNICEF is the world’s leading organisation working for children and their rights. The Rights Respecting Schools Award is granted to schools that show commitment to promoting and realising children’s rights and encouraging adults, children and young people to respect the rights of others in school. Gold is the highest accolade given by UNICEF UK and shows a deep and thorough commitment to children’s rights at all levels of school life. There are over 600 schools across England, Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales that have received Gold.

The school has been working with UNICEF UK since November 2019. They received their Silver certificate in May 2021.

Joanne Hurst, Headteacher at Millwood Primary, said: At Millwood, children’s rights are embedded in our vision and values and lie at the heart of our school’s planning, policies and practice. As duty bearers we ensure the Convention is evident in all aspects of school life and that children’s rights are learned, taught, practised, respected, protected and promoted. We are a school who believes in entitlement and opportunity for all. We are extremely proud to have received the Gold Award from UNICEF UK, the highest award possible. To achieve this award means so much to all in our school community. I would like to thank all stakeholders for their commitment and dedication during this journey with particular thanks to Beckie Savage, assistant headteacher, and our fantastic children who have been instrumental in the process”

The UNICEF UK Rights Respecting Schools initiative is aimed at schools across the UK, including those in an early years setting. Currently, it works with nearly 5,000 primary schools, secondary schools, schools for children and young people with special educational needs and pupil referral units across England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales. Schools have reported a positive impact on pupil behaviour, relationships and well-being by enhancing pupils’ self-esteem, leading to less truancy and bullying, better learning and improved academic standards.
